Location Mannheim

The oil mill in Mannheim‘s harbour Bonadieshafen, with an annual capacity of over 1 million tons one of the biggest in Europe, has changed its name several times during its history – nevertheless, it’s still the „VDO“ for Mannheim residents. That’s not surprising: The company is one of the oldest ones in Mannheim’s harbour. Its foundation is considered to be June 30th, 1887, when six fairly big, mostly South German oil mills joined forces and created the „Verein deutscher Ölfabriken“ („German Oil Mill Association“).

Between 1920 and 1990, the company with currently approx. 200 employees belonged to Unilever, afterwards to the Cereol group, and since 2003 to the Bunge Group, one of the world’s largest trading and processing companies of oil and grain seeds.

The most dramatic experience in the last years was the fire in the pressing plant in 2010. On April 26th, a fire broke out in the old brick building, causing material damage in the tens of millions and leaving behind a building very close to collapse. For some months, the production in Mannheim stood completely still.

A few hundred meters from the old building, the new modern pressing plant with a height of 37 meters was built in just two years.

In 2013, the Mannheim Bio Fuel GmbH, which had been operated as a joint venture, was fully taken over, in order to achieve an even more efficient execution of the highly interdependent production processes. With this acquisition and others, BEMEA is one of the largest industrial producers of biofuels in Europe.

In 2016, the Mannheim Bio Fuel GmbH was successfully merged into the Bunge Deutschland GmbH. The Merger was published on August 15th, 2016 and is valid from January 1st 2016. The Merger is a milestone of the Optimization-Program in the Biodiesel Branch.
